Facts of the Silver Jubilee Home for the aged in Penang





  • 200 people live in Jubilee House for the elderly.

  • The minimum age to be in is 65+ and the average age is 75.

  • Silver Jubilee Home for the elderly is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) which means that the budget is obtained through donations made by the public and that the organisation does not make any profit. Not a lot of houses for the elderly are NGO’s.

  • The inhabitants of this house have no insurance nor relatives and children to support them.

  • The house management, at first, investigates if the candidate has somebody to support them as there is somebody who is able to support them it is not possible to live in that accommodation.

  • When the would-be inhabitants  register at the beginning of the month , they get the admission by the end of the same month. They have to sit for two interviews with the management so that they are allowed to stay.

  • Three to five people apply for a place at  Silver Jubilee Home each month. Normally, applicants who fulfil the requirements can get a place. At the moment of reporting, there is still enough room for prospective applicants.


  • It is hard for the elderly to accept the new environment because it is a completely different environment from their home they come from. 
  • The inhabitants are mainly Chinese (80%),  Malays (10%) and Indians (10% )  at Silver Jubilee Home.

  • The inhabitants have to be born in Penang (checked by the ID card). Otherwise, they will not be registered.

  • At the private homes  for the elderly,  the inhabitants have to pay MR 800 and above.



  • This  home was  renovated 1 ½ years ago.

  • They have monthly birthday celebrations.

  • They do outing with or without the staff members (going out for dinner or lunch).

  • They do some activities such as Bingo, karaoke and gymnastic exercises every morning for 1 hour.

  • They are not allowed to go out of the home  without permission.
  • Every month there are cleaning campaigns. It is going to be checked if the room and the person is clean.
  • There is a lot of outgoing. For example, a trip to Kek-Lok-Si temple. During these trips, the residents can have lunch outside which is normally provided by sponsors.
  • Every month,  the home management checks the rooms after cleaning.
